Search Engines,Subject Directories, and the Invisible Web...

Search Engines - There are already hundreds of millions of Web pages on the Internet and new ones are being created daily. How do you find the information you need? Start with a search engine - Alta Vista, Google, Excite, HotBot, and Go.com are just a few of the single search engines available on the net.

Librarian's Index to the Internet - This link allows you to search recommended search engines.

Metasearch sites search more than one search engine at the same time. Metasearch sites include: Dogpile, alltheweb, Mamma, EZ-Find Page, Eclectic Web's WWW Search and MetaCrawler.

AskJeeves - This search engines allows you to use natural language

Find a couple of search engines you like and explore all the search options available to improve your search results. Learn more about search engines by visiting these sites.

Search Engine Watch - Provides and overview of the major search engines, a guide to search engines, and search engines reviews and tutorials.

Internet Tutorials - (University at Albany libraries) Provides Internet Tutorials. Topics include basic Internet, research guides, Internet research tips, explanation of Boolean logic and more.

 Subject Directories - Subject directories are another great way to locate information on the Web. These directories organize sites by subject categories with links to the sites. These guides often annotate or evaluate the sites they have listed. Some directories are more selective than others.

Access to Internet and Subject Resources (University of Delaware Library) - Provides both an alphabetical and subject group listing of Internet sites.

The Argus Clearinghouse - Provides a highly selective subjective directory.

InfoMime Scholarly Internet Resource Collections - (Library of the University of California) Provides a listing of Web Web resources for students, faculty, and research staff at the university level.

Internet Scout Project - Selection of sites provided by librarians and educators is available in the Scout Report. Searchable archives available.

WWW Virtual Library - Provides a high quality listing of web sites from probably the oldest subject directory on the Web.

Yahoo - Provides the largest subject directory on the Web but is not a selective listing. Evaluate each site.

Invisible Web - The invisible web contains a vast amount of information stored in databases that is not accessible by the search engines. Guides to the Invisible Web are available from the following web sites:
