Evaluation of Web Resources...

The Internet is a great place for you to research most topics. There is quality material amidst the junk. Valid information is more likely to be found on sites created by established, credible organizations. It is important for you to evaluate the quality of information on web pages. These are just a few of the questions you need to ask before using a web page as a source.

Internet Evaluation Web Sites

Evaluating Web Sites: Criterial and Tools - Provides information on Context, Evaluation Criteria, Web Reviews and Rankings and a Webliography.

Thinking Critically about World Wide Web Resources - A checklist of questions examining the content, source, date, structure and other aspects of web pages is available on this UCLA website.

Evaluation Web Sites for Educational Uses: Critical Evaluation Surveys for Internet Resources - This website provides a bibliography of evaluation resources and a checklist of question to ask when evaluating sites.

For further information go to this web site, Teaching Critical Evaluation Skills for World Wide Web Resources, developed by Jan Alexander and Marsha Tate of Widener University, Pennsylvania. In this excellent presentation, Alexander and Tate identify five types of web pages -- advocacy, business/marketing, informational, news, and personal -- and provide a checklist of questions for each type to determine the accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency and scope of web pages. Example web pages and additional web evaluation links are also provided.

Always check with your teacher. Your instructor is the final authority on the acceptability of a source.
