MGCCC Department Home Page Templates

Establishing a department homepage for the MGCCC web site is a process which can prove to be highly valuable. Students, visitors and peers are able to stay up to date on all of the information within your department easily and quickly. A few tips are included here to help get any department moving in the right direction towards creating a presence on the MGCCC web site.

First, each department should designate a single department webmaster who agrees to take the lead with designing and maintaining the department site. The department webmaster should visit department web sites from other institutions to gain a feel for what would best suit the department. Having a single contact for the department makes it an easier task whenever changes become necessary.

When designing a site, it is best to try to adhere to a rule of consistency. Each page should follow a functional design. There are usually a few elements that should be present for each site. These are:

  1. A description of the department, its facilities, purpose, goals, mission, etc.
  2. List all faculty and staff members of the department. Make sure to include contact information for each person as well as office hours.
  3. A curriculum for the department. (optional)
  4. An overview of the job market for potential students. (optional)
  5. A list of helpful links. These can be links to job listings, educational resources, research information, etc.

Please review the Department Guidelines regarding what should be present on your pages before you begin designing them. Remember that your site is a reflection on MGCCC in general and your department in particular. Please try to make your site the highest quality. It may be beneficial to review the Design Tips section before moving on.

While not everyone is prolific in HTML or site design, there are a few tools out there that will help make designing a departmental site easier. Most every Microsoft Office 2000 applications include the ability to save your work as HTML. This has made adding content to the web much easier. In an effort to build on this ability, we have established two templates that should be helpful when designing your site. The first uses Microsoft PowerPoint due to the ability to design pages with a high degree of precision. The second uses Microsoft FrontPage and is available for more ambitious department webmasters. Select the one which best suits your needs from the list below.

The Microsoft FrontPage template is actually a link to pages that will give you an idea of a clean design for your departmental homepage. To use this template, open the link in your browser. You may save this file on your hard drive using the Save As option under the File menu on your browser. Next, open this file in Microsoft FrontPage and edit the fields to adhere to your department information. Remember that not all fields may be used and can be deleted if necessary.

No matter which template you use, you must contact the Webmaster for further instructions about getting your site approved for launch. The files will undergo a review to make sure they adhere to the guidelines for departmental home pages. After you have edited your files, save them and then contact the Webmaster to review your site.
