Enrollment down, hopes high for regaining students

Since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, more than 3,000 students have withdrawn from fall classes from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, but the college was able to recoup some of the lost enrollment when it started the Fast Track accelerated semester on Oct. 24.

Veterans History Project
Veterans Day program set for Nov. 11 at JD

Since March 2004, veterans from South Mississippi have shared their stories and memorabilia with the Veterans History Project, a national endeavor taken on locally by partners Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, WLOX-TV, Chevron Pascagoula and Keesler Federal Credit Union.

Dedication, groundbreaking ceremonies highlight November

Hurricane Katrina delayed several dedication and groundbreaking ceremonies at the college, but lost time is now being made up.  From Nov. 16 until Dec. 1, a few Gulf Coast locations will be abuzz with ceremonies celebrating new facilities, both complete and still on the architect’s drafting table, and remembering those for which some of these facilities are named.

Job training offers a direct link to construction industry

A new four-week pilot program beginning Nov. 7 will train students in construction basics to prepare them for direct entry into jobs rebuilding the coast after Hurricane Katrina. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will partner with the Mississippi Construction Education Foundation to offer Project Outreach, a multi-craft training program.

Lynn Franklin of Gulfport has joined Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Board of Trustees, a 23-member board that represents Gulf Coast’s district of Stone, George, Jackson and Harrison counties.
