Community college transfers boost IHL graduation numbers

Using data provided by the state’s public universities, the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges recently released a report showing the number of community college transfer students who completed bachelor’s degrees at the Mississippi’s eight universities.

Dr. Joe Cliburn, associate vice president for Institutional Research, says, "Over one-third of all graduates receiving baccalaureate degrees from IHL institutions in FY 2005 were community/junior college transfers.”

One in every nine baccalaureate graduates from the University of Southern Mississippi - Hattiesburg transferred from MGCCC, and more than 36 percent of all graduates from USM-Gulf Coast were MGCCC transfers, according to the report. 

Other summary information included these stats:

  • 34 percent of all students who graduated from all IHL institutions in 2005 were CJC transfers.
  • 12 percent of all CJC transfers who graduated from IHL institutions transferred from MGCCC.
  • 4 percent of all students who graduated from all IHL institutions were MGCCC transfers.
  • 11 percent of all students who graduated from USM-Hattiesburg were MGCCC transfers.
  • 20 percent of all CJC transfers who graduated from USM-Hattiesburg were MGCCC transfers.
  • 36 percent of all students who graduated from USM-Gulf Park were MGCCC transfers.
  • 53 percent of all CJC transfers who graduated from USM-Gulf Park were MGCCC transfers.
