Backyard Barbecue crowd crows about another record enrollment

The annual Backyard Barbecue at Liaison drew a crowd of nearly 600 people. The tradition occurs before the first football game of the season and is hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Willis Lott to welcome friends and alumni to the college and to open their home to employees and their families.

Two special achievements were honored. First, new head football coach Steve Campbell and the 2004 team made an early appearance. Dressed in shirts and ties, the players were cheered by the crowd, but made a quick exit to prepare for the game. Campbell stayed and gave a Bulldog Club report.

Also, the college celebrated another record enrollment. A two-tiered cake, banner and floating 48-inch balloons boasted 11,000 students. This set the stage for President Lott as he addressed the picnic crowd. He recognized the employees of the college for their collective efforts to serve more students and praised alumni, retirees, elected officials and others who continue to support the mission of the college.

Lott also told the crowd Gulf Coast expected to remain the largest community college in the state. Gulf Coast took this distinction from Hinds Community College in fall 2003, and, with another record enrollment, it appeared the No. 1 spot was safely secured by Gulf Coast, Lott said.
