Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College transformed the George County Center in Lucedale into a child’s ultimate playground for the inaugural Kids Fest. The family event drew around 1,000 parents and children from across South Mississippi. Kids Fest was hosted by the George County Alumni Chapter and raised more than $7,000 for Gulf Coast student scholarships. “This event really brought the community to the college’s George County Center. Past scholarship fundraisers at the center depended on the loyal support of alumni and college employees,” Dr. Dean Belton, Dean of the George County Center said. “But Kids Fest introduced a whole new group of community leaders and children to the college. Plans are already being made for next year’s event.” The festival had dozens of activities for families, from pony rides, rock wall climbing, hands-on crafts and jumping space walk. Along with activities for children, parents learned valuable knowledge regarding children’s health at the Health Fair and safety tips along with fingerprinting from the Lucedale Police Department. “The Kids Fest is presented as a partnership between the college’s Alumni Association in George County, area businesses and community leaders. It's a win-win situation for everybody because not only does it bring the community together for a day of fun and activities, but it also raises money for George County student scholarships,” Brenda Donahoe, the college’s Alumni Officer said.
