Dale Brown (basketball 1989-91): Dale Brown played two seasons with former basketball coach Bob Weathers and helped the Bulldogs win the Region 23 title in 1989-90. In Brown’s sophomore season, the Moss Point native was a key member of a team that went 35-5, won the state championship, and another Region 23 title. The 1990-‘91 squad also finished fourth in the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

Joe McAnulty (deceased/basketball, baseball, tennis 1956-58): Joe McAnulty took the term “multi-sport athlete” to a whole new level at Gulf Coast in the late 1950’s. The Albemarle, N.C. native played and lettered in basketball, baseball and tennis during his time at Perk. In basketball, he helped the Bulldogs become one of the highest scoring teams in the nation. On the diamond, his two-year batting average was .360 and as a pitcher he chalked up an 11-2 career record with the Bulldogs. As a singles player on the tennis team, McAnulty went undefeated from 1956-58.

Florence M. Jones (basketball & volleyball 1971-73): The Leaf native was an athletic pioneer at Perk: She was the first black female athlete to play organized sports at Gulf Coast. Her courage and leadership were paramount during the 1972-’73 basketball campaign, when the Lady Bulldogs, coached by Sue Ross, won the AIAW National Championship. Jones also played volleyball at Perk. Off the court, she was a member of several campus organizations.

George Rosetti (1957-58 basketball): George Rosetti was a member of the 1957-58 men’s basketball team at Perk that was the first to play its home games at the Wentzell Center. During that season the Gulfport native was an All-State selection on a team that led the state in scoring. After his time at Perk, Rosetti coached basketball from 1961-2004 at the junior high, high school, college and professional levels. While at Phillips Junior College, he led the women’s team to back-to-back NLCAA national titles in 1985 and 1986.

Barbara Patton Ladner (1960-62 basketball, tennis): This lifetime member of the Gulf Coast Alumni Association was a standout high school athlete before she came to Gulf Coast. While at Perkinston Agricultural High School, she routinely made the Gulf Coast Conference all-star team and also took home several MVP honors. In college, she played basketball and tennis, while also being involved in several campus organizations. Her ties to Gulf Coast have stayed firm since her graduation. Ladner served as scholarship chair for the college’s Harrison County alumni chapter and also helped organize the Harrison County fish fry fundraiser.

Rhonda Hickman Scott (basketball, softball 1984-86): If the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) were around in the late 1980’s, many think Rhonda Hickman would’ve played in the league. The Wiggins native was an all-state selection in 1986 in basketball and went on to have a stellar career on the court at the University of West Florida. Hickman also played softball at Perk. In 1986, she helped lead the Lady Bulldogs win the state and Region 23 championships. That squad also finished fifth in the national tournament under the leadership of head coach Doris “Blackie” Smith.
