The JD Players Will Present Four Plays During the Upcoming Theatre Season

“The Liar” by Pierre Corneille, October 22-25

The JD Players season opens with “The Liar” by Pierre Corneille, October 22-25, in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Adapted by David Ives, the comedy is set in Paris during 1643. Dorante is a charming young man, newly arrived in the capital, and he has but a single flaw: He cannot tell the truth.

In quick succession he meets Cliton, a manservant who cannot tell a lie, and falls in love with Clarice, a charming young woman whom he unfortunately mistakes for her friend Lucrece. Clarice is secretly engaged to Dorante’s best friend Alcippe, and Dorante is unaware that his father is trying to get him married to Clarice, who he thinks is Lucrece, who actually is in love with him. From all these misunderstandings and a series of breathtakingly intricate lies springs a hilarious show that is totally appealing to modern audiences.

“Farndale Avenue” by David McGullivray and Walter Zerlin Jr., December 2-6

On December 2-6, the JD Players will present “The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society’s Production of A Christmas Carol” in the Arena Theatre. The comedy by David McGullivray and Walter Zerlin Jr. is loosely based on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and is a hilarious assault on the classic. Included are a dizzying array of characters from the Dickensian favorite (and a few who aren’t), some novel audience participation with an intrusive PA system and some incredible show-stopping songs. Audiences will be enthralled by the dramatic massacre of the Christmas classic.

“The God of Carnage” by Yasmina Reza, February 17-21

“The God of Carnage” by Yasmina Reza will be presented February 17-21 in the Arena Theatre. The black comedy, translated by Christopher Hampton, is about two sets of parents, one of whose child has hurt the other at a public park, who meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes on, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening devolving into chaos. As the evening goes on, the meeting degenerates into the four parents getting into irrational arguments, and their discussion falls into the loaded topics of misogyny, racial prejudice and homophobia.

“The Fantasticks” by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, April 13-17

The JD Players will present “The Fantasticks” by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt April 13-17 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, two fathers and a wall. The perfect first musical for any child to see, the show’s narrator, El Gallo, leads the audience into a world of moonlight and magic. The boy and the girl fall in love, grow apart and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo’s words that “without a hurt, the heart is hollow.”
