MGCCC Children and Youth Programs

Child DevelopmentDuring the summertime, Gulf Coast campuses buzz with members of the younger generation. From swimming lessons to science camps, we have something that will keep your young one entertained and happy all summer long.

Learn-to-Swim Programs
Gulf Coast's three campuses -- Perkinston, Jefferson Davis and Jackson County -- offer swim programs designed for preschool children and older. Most of the programs are an effort between the college and the American Red Cross. The cost is usually only around $30-$35 a person.

The campuses also have hours during which the community can enjoy the pools.

Summer Camps
Is your child a chemistry whiz? An actor? An artist? A cheerleader? Well, we have something to fit many talents.

Performing Arts Summer Workshop for Young People
Each summer, the Perkinston Campus fine arts department, with the support of the Mississippi Arts Commission, holds this week-long workshop. For a whole week, first through ninth graders express their creative side in morning and afternoon workshops geared toward dance, theatre and music. The final day of the workshop ends with participants putting their talents to work in performance and technique demonstrations.

Perkinston Campus Summer Science Camp
Perkinston Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will offer "budding" scientific minds a chance to experiment with learning -- without opening a textbook. The students will achieve this through hands-on participation in the campus' annual retreat-style Summer Science Camp. The two-session camp is open to students entering the seventh, eight and ninth grades. In addition to providing them with an early introduction to the major fields of science, it is also designed to promote individual interest and career guidance.

Enrollment for the four-night/five-day camp is limited to 30 students in each session. With its growing popularity, early registration is recommended. While learning is the focus of the camp, there is another key element in its formula for success - fun! Recreational and social activities - swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and a picnic and cookout help create a memorable experience for the youngsters. Some campers say the learn-plus-fun balance is the reason their first year wasn't their last!

The cost to attend camp is $225 and includes dorm accommodations (five days/four nights), meals, field trips, and day/night supervision.

Chemistry Day Camp
Co-sponsored by Pascagoula's First Chemical Corporation, the camp --offered in two sessions in July-- is open to students who have completed grades seven, eight and nine. Its designed to combine learning and fun and promote an interest in chemistry.

Students enjoy hands-on activities, like making a latex ball, growing crystals, computer work and more.
