Special Services available at MGCCC

Going to college is like moving into a new neighborhood -- it takes you a while to become familiar and comfortable with your surroundings. Gulf Coast puts out the welcome mat for students by providing a variety of support services. From children's workshops to learning in retirement, Gulf Coast offers something for all people, of all ages, of all backgrounds. Just take a look at what we have especially for you.

  • Orientation and Pre-registration
Orientation and pre-registration is the best route for students enrolling for the first time. It's a get-acquainted session before the semester begins -- a talk and walk-through tour of the college. Pre-registration lets you get the jump on a new semester and avoid the crowd at regular registration. Plus, you get first choice of classes at times that best fit your schedule.
  • Counseling and Advising
During orientation, students meet with counselors and faculty advisers to discuss program and career choices and to plan class schedules. That personal one-on-one contact follows students throughout their stay at Gulf Coast.
  • Learning Resource Centers
Libraries, learning labs and media centers join forces in the Learning Resource Center at each campus. With automated libraries, books with bar codes and computer-assisted research, we're opening up a world of resources and speeding up library work.
  • Learning Labs
Need help to improve your reading skills? Write a research paper? In the Learning Lab, students can get help in reading, writing, math, science and other subjects outside of their regular classes. During individual or group sessions, Learning Lab instructors work with students to build skills -- and confidence.
  • Open Computer Labs
Day and night, Gulf Coast students have access to computers for class work in the Open Computer Lab. Computer proficiency is a must-have skill for students and workers everywhere. So, qualified lab assistants are on hand to help students with hardware and software questions.

  • Career Centers
Matching the best career to a particular student and the best applicant to a particular job are just two of the services available in the college's career centers. There's also help with career planning, resume' writing and a statewide network of job listings.
  • Career-Technical Support Services
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College believes that all students deserve a chance to be successful in their fields of study

A Career-Technical Department Support Services Team at each campus and center can help you succeed in the career or technical field of your choice. The team members are college faculty who are dedicated to serving the special needs of students with disabilities; students who are experiencing academic difficulties; students who have difficulty with the English language; students who are entering non-traditional fields; students who are single parents or displaced homemakers; and students who are economically disadvantaged. If you are interested in learning more about these special services, please contact the campus or center nearest you.

  • Adult Basic Skills Programs
From 16 to over 70, people of all ages enroll in the college's ABE/GED and ESL programs. From learning basic skills and inspiring English language proficiency to getting a GED diploma, Gulf Coast can help you along the way. Classes happen at different times, at convenient locations.

Call the adult basic skills manager at the campus of your choice for more details:

  • Continuing Education
Variety is the name of the game in continuing education offerings at Gulf Coast -- managing your personal finances, learning how to use a computer or making a piece of pottery. There's something for everyone, including summers filled with children's programs in swimming, science and the arts.
  • Lifelong Learning Institute
You're never too old to strengthen your intellect or enrich your life. Just ask the 50-plus retiree crowd. The LLI at Gulf Coast is a membership program for retirees. A small yearly fee of $50 provides members with a long list of benefits, including a student rate at athletic and performing arts events, Gulf Coast library and Learning Lab privileges, a discount rate at the college's fitness centers, campus parking permits and so much more. The group elects officers and plans its activities according to the interests of its members. Travel tips, luncheon seminars, fitness programs and classroom instruction are on the agenda for this busy group of "students." The LLI is located at Gulf Coast's Jefferson Davis, Jackson County and Perkinston campuses. Members can attend any LLI course or event offered district-wide.
