Midwestern artist Jonathan D. Metzger will present his exhibit, “A Nation’s Identity,” at the Fine Art Gallery on Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jefferson Davis Campus from November 6 through December 6. His work revolves around the American identity and its ever-changing nature, especially within the context of masculinity.

“This current body of artwork is influenced by the landscape of the American Midwest,” Metzger said. “The tools, structures, and environments within my work originate from my experience spending my formative years on a farm in the southeast corner of Minnesota. Referencing objects from both my father’s work shed and my mother’s kitchen, I am continually fascinated how these two worlds collide to create new meanings and understandings.”

Metzger received his master of fine arts degree from the University of Kansas, and is currently a visiting assistant professor of Art at Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville, Virginia. He was previously a visiting assistant professor of Art at Millsaps College in Jackson.

His art varies from drawings and prints to paintings and sculpture. “Exploring both the domestic, kitchen-centered world I grew up watching, as well as the pole barn construction and farm chores I participated in, my work navigates the space between these two distinct ideologies and spheres.  Through mystery and humor, I use the objects that surround me to question the real and unknown.”

The Fine Arts Gallery is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information about the exhibition, please contact Matt Steadman at (228) 897-3736 or matthew.steadman@mgccc.edu.
