Mississippi’s first lady Marsha Barbour will kick off the Instructors on the Move walking campaign at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jackson County Campus in Gautier on September 15. The event, which will continue throughout the school year, consists of teams of instructors, staff and students who compete against each other to walk the furthest during the year.
Barbour will share information about Let’s Go Walkin’ Mississippi in the Fine Arts Auditorium during a 1 p.m. ceremony. Let’s Go Walkin’ is a campaign sponsored by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mississippi; Barbour is the spokesperson. After the ceremony, she will join the teams in a walk around the campus track.
The theme of this year’s walking event, sponsored by the campus Professional Development Team, is “Walking the Natchez Trace,” with teams attempting to walk 440 miles, or the same distance as the Trace. An interactive map of the Natchez Trace will show the location of miles walked. Each week, teams and individuals submit the number of miles walked for a chance at prizes.
