Proctored Exams for Online Students

Students enrolled in Mississippi Virtual Community College Courses are required to take at least one proctored exam per semester. The guidelines for these students are as follows:

  1. Instructors will give their students test dates and instructions regarding which assessments are to be taken in a proctored environment. Students should plan for testing as early as possible, as appointments will fill up at peak times.
  2. Students who wish to take their proctored tests at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College must make their appointments with our online scheduling software at least two working days before the test date.
  3. Students will receive an appointment confirmation via email, which should be retained as evidence of the appointment.

TEAS

The TEAS is a multiple-choice assessment of basic academic knowledge in reading, mathematics, science and English and language usage. A 60% score on TEAS V is required for admission consideration beginning with the class admitting in Spring 2011.

Upon completion of the TEAS students receive individual results and will know what topics need additional remediation. Group results are also available for program faculty and administration upon completion. The TEAS is used as an admission component to admit students into the nursing program.

All individuals preparing to take the TEAS test must create an ATI account. Time Limit is 209 minutes. The TEAS includes four-option multiple-choice test items, with 170 total questions. Calculators may NOT be used for the test. Test results available 48 hours after completion of the test.

  • Reading (48 questions, 58 minutes) À section includes questions regarding paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and informational source comprehension.
  • Math (34 items, 51 minutes) À section includes questions regarding numbers and operations, algebraic applications, data interpretation, measurement.

**NOTE: Calculators are not allowed

  • Science (54 items, 66 minutes) À section includes questions regarding human body science, life science, earth and physical science and scientific reasoning.
  • English and Language Usage (34 items, 34 minutes) À section includes questions regarding grammar and word meanings in context, spelling, punctuation, structure.
  • Total test time is 3 hours and 29 minutes.
  • Scores will be shown immediately on the screen following the exam.

Creating an ATI Account

All individuals preparing to take the TEAS must create an ATI account. You may create an account by going to ATI's website at www.atitesting.com and then click on "create a new account". You will then follow the screen prompts. You only need to register once but you will need your ATI username and password to take the TEAS. Please bring your account information with you to the testing session.

Preparing for the TEAS-the following products are available to assist with preparing for the TEAS:

  • TEAS Pre-Test Study Manual- $42.00
  • TEAS Online Practice Assessments- $35.00 each (Form A or Form B)
  • TEAS Study Package- $85.00 (Includes Study Manual, Form A and Form B)
  • TEAS Transcripts- TEAS scores are automatically sent to the school through which you took the TEAS, but can be sent to other schools for a charge of $22.00/school.

CLEP

CLEP is a national program of credit by examination that allows a person to obtain recognition for college-level achievement. In the of Fall of 2000 MGCCC was approved as a limited CLEP testing site. As such, MGCCC administers CLEP exams to students who are enrolled at MGCCC.

CLEP offers two types of tests: general examinations and subject examinations. General exams measure familiarity with material covered in courses taken during the first two years of college to meet general education requirements. They include English composition, humanities, college mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, and history. Subject exams measure knowledge usually acquired in specific college courses and are used to grant credit for these courses. The CLEP exams for which MGCCC accepts credit are listed in the catalog along with the required testing scores.

COMPASS

Once they have applied to MGCCC, students without ACT scores take the COMPASS test for placement purposes. Students may schedule appointments for placement tests by enrolling in our online appointment software. (Choose "Make appointment for Other Exams" at the bottom of the list.) Students unable to use a computer to take the test may take ASSET, a print version of the test.

COMPUTER COMPETENCY

The Computer Competency Exam has been developed to demonstrate computer competency for graduating students who have not taken a computer class but believe they are competent in the following areas:

  • navigating the Internet;
  • utilizing the World Wide web to conduct research;
  • communicating via electronic mail*;
  • producing documents in a word processing program;
  • creating spreadsheets with a computer application.
