Scholarships
Institutional Scholarships at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community college are based on academic and/or participatory performance. Effective 2010-2011, all students awarded Institutional Scholarships must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually, and student eligibility for federal aid must be confirmed.
Priority deadline for confirmation of eligibility for federal aid is August 1, 2010.
Institutional Scholarships at the college are comprised of three major categories: (A) Merit Scholarships, (B) Performance and Service-Based Scholarships, and (C) Athletic Scholarships. Merit Scholarships, Performance and Service-Based Scholarships and Athletic Scholarships are all considered Institutional Scholarships in the order of application of payments to students’ accounts.
Merit Scholarships
Academic Scholarships: The college provides academic scholarship opportunities for full-time, “first-time to enter college” freshmen students with qualifying ACT scores. Students must apply for admission, meet the requirements as listed below, and send the “Request for Academic scholarship” to the campus of their choice.
Presidential scholarship: ACT Score 28 and above or Valedictorian/ Salutatorian of High School graduating class
Full Tuition, book rental and room/board (Residence halls are only available at the Perkinston Campus).
NOTE: The Presidential scholarship is the only Institutional scholarship that includes a meal plan.
To be eligible, a student must be a legal resident of Mississippi and enrolled in a minimum of 15 semester hours. This scholarship is renewable up to four consecutive semesters, not including summer.
To remain eligible, students must maintain a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average as a full-time student. Students who drop below the 3.5 will be placed on scholarship probation for one probationary semester to allow the student to regain the 3.5 cumulative GPA. If the student does not bring the cumulative GPA up to 3.5 or above the next semester, the student will no longer receive the scholarship. Priority deadline is April 1.
Dean’s scholarship: ACT Score 25-27 Full Tuition
To be eligible, a student must be a legal resident of Mississippi and enrolled in a minimum of 15 semester hours. This scholarship is renewable up to four consecutive semesters, not including summer.
To remain eligible, students must maintain a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average as a full-time student. Students who drop below the 3.0 will be placed on scholarship probation for one probationary semester to allow the student to regain the 3.0 cumulative GPA. If the student does not bring the cumulative GPA up to 3.0 or above the next semester, the student will no longer receive the scholarship. Priority deadline is April 1.
Incentive scholarship: ACT Score 21-24 Half Tuition
To be eligible, a student must be a legal resident of Mississippi and enrolled in a minimum of 15 semester hours. This scholarship is renewable up to four consecutive semesters, not including summer.
To remain eligible, students must maintain a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average as a full-time student. Students who drop below the 2.5 will be placed on scholarship probation for one probationary semester to allow the student to regain the 2.5 cumulative GPA. If the student does not bring the cumulative GPA up to 2.5 or above the next semester, the student will no longer receive the scholarship. Priority deadline is April 1.
Honors Scholarships: Full-tuition scholarship awarded to eligible participants in the Honors college. Interested students should contact the program sponsor at the campus they plan to attend. Priority deadline is April 1. To be eligible for an Honors scholarship, a student must be enrolled in a minimum of 15 semester hours. Information regarding entrance and continued eligibility for the Honors college and Honors scholarship can be found in the college Catalog.
Career-Technical Scholarships: Full-tuition scholarship awarded to full-time, “first-time to enter college” freshmen career/technical students who have a high-school diploma and have completed a two-year career/technical training program with an overall high school average of B or above at a high school that has an articulated training agreement with MGCCC.
A half-tuition career/technical scholarship is also available for students with a “C” average in academic courses and an “A” average in career/technical courses. The eligibility requirements to continue to receive this scholarship are that a student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and to successfully complete a minimum of 15 semester hours each fall and spring semester (an IP grade does not count as successfully completing a course).
For career programs, these scholarships are renewable for the length of the program. For career/technical programs, it is renewable for the length of the program, which may include summer enrollment for programs that require summer attendance as indicated in the college catalog. For two-year programs that do not require summer attendance, the scholarship is renewable for four consecutive fall/spring semesters.
Career-Technical Student Organization Competition Scholarships: Full-tuition scholarship awarded to Mississippi residents that are full-time, “first-time to enter college” freshmen career/technical students who have a high-school diploma, have completed a two-year secondary career/technical/vocational program and have either placed first in a state competition or first, second or third in a national competition sponsored by an MDE recognized vocational student organization. The eligibility requirements to continue to receive this scholarship are that a student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and to successfully complete a minimum of 15 semester hours each fall and spring semester. The Career and Technical Student Organization Competition scholarship is renewable for the length of the program as prescribed in the college catalog and is applicable to all career technical programs which award a diploma, AAS, or AASOE degree.
MDE nationally recognized vocational student organizations are: Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Future Farmers of America (FFA), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), SkillsUSA, and Technology Student Association (TSA)
GED Scholarships: Students who earn a GED score of 577 or higher are awarded a half-time scholarship for one semester covering a maximum of six semester hours. This scholarship covers tuition.
Students who earn a GED score of 450 to 576 are eligible to take one free class for one semester covering a maximum of three semester hours. This scholarship covers tuition.
In order to qualify for these awards, students must have taken the GED test within the past three years, be over the age of 18, and their attendance at MGCCC must be their first-time college attendance.
Mississippi Jr. Miss and Miss Mississippi America Scholarships: A full-tuition scholarship awarded to full-time, “first-time to enter college” freshmen student (hours taken as a dually enrolled high school student do not affect scholarship eligibility). To be eligible, a student must be a Mississippi Jr. Miss preliminary winner and/or a Miss Mississippi America preliminary winner and enrolled in a minimum of 15 semester hours.
This scholarship is renewable up to four consecutive semesters, not including summer. To remain eligible, students must maintain a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average as a full-time student. Students who drop below the 3.0 will be placed on scholarship probation for one probationary semester to allow the student to regain the 3.0 cumulative GPA. If the student does not bring the cumulative GPA up to 3.0 or above the next semester, the student will no longer receive the scholarship. Priority deadline is April 1.
Performance and Service-Based Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded based on a student’s individual abilities. Interested students should contact the appropriate department(s) regarding tryouts. These scholarships include such performance and/or service groups as managers, band, cheerleaders, choir, drama, Mississippi Sound, Perkettes, Reflections, and Resident Assistants.
To be eligible for Performance and Service-Based Scholarships, a student must be enrolled in a minimum of 15 semester hours. This scholarship is limited to six total semesters. To remain eligible, students must maintain a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average as a full-time student. Students who drop below the 2.5 will be placed on scholarship probation for one probationary semester to allow the student to regain the 2.5 cumulative GPA. If the student does not bring the cumulative GPA up to 2.5 or above the next semester, the student will no longer receive the scholarship. Priority deadline is April 1.
Athletic Scholarships
Athletic Scholarships are awarded based on a student’s individual abilities. Athletic Scholarships require students to comply with all Mississippi Association of Community and Junior colleges (MACJC) and National Junior college Athletic Association (NJCAA) policies. The awarding of athletic scholarships will be in accordance with the MACJC Handbook as approved by the community and junior college presidents.
General Information
A maximum of two Institutional Scholarships may be applied to a student’s account each semester. In the case of multiple Institutional Scholarships, a student should choose the two scholarships which benefit him/her the most.
Institutional Scholarships are applied only after all applicable grant funds have been credited to the student’s account.
The value of Institutional scholarship(s) are eligible for a total cash refund not to exceed $900 per semester regardless of the number of Institutional Scholarships or amount of Institutional scholarship funds applied to a student’s account. Refunds of Institutional Scholarships will only be awarded if the student’s account balance reflects zero after all payments are applied. Any balance remaining in an Institutional scholarship(s) will be returned to the college.
The amount of funds received from an Institutional scholarship is limited to tuition and/or book rental for commuter students and tuition, book rental, and/or room/board for residential students. Fees including, but not limited to, registration fees, technology fees, on-line class fees, Career-Technical program fees, excessive credit hour fees (any credit hours above 18 semester hours), etc., will not be included in the amount of Institutional scholarship funds awarded. Any fees applied to the account of a student who qualifies for a cash refund of Institutional Scholarships will be deducted from the student’s cash refund prior to receiving the cash refund.

School graduates attending Jackson County Campus.

of Stone County and a graduate of Stone High School who has maintained
at least a "B" average throughout high school. May attend any campus.
- Randle J. and Zettie B. Dedeaux Scholarship - Stone County residents,
"B" average graduates of Stone High School.
- John C. Dees Scholarship Fund - general scholarships, with preference
to Stone County students.
- Diamondhead Performing Arts Scholarship - recipient must be active
in the Fine Arts Program.
- Jeanne Ello Scholarship - recipients must be physically and financially
disadvantaged and attending the Jackson County Campus.
- Sarah Bailey Emerson Scholarship/Loan Fund - provides loans to MGCCC
graduates to attend senior college.
- Etta V. and William A. Frantzen Scholarship - recipients must attend
the Perkinston Campus and maintain a 2.0 GPA.
- Florida Alumni Chapter - for general scholarship.
- Patsy McCoy Freeman Scholarship - for music majors at any campus.
- GCOTC Scholarship - recipients must be George County residents and
enrolled in a career program at the George County Center.
- GED Memorial Scholarship - recipients must be GED graduates enrolling
in college for the first time and must be part time.
- Floyd and Zenobia Gill Scholarship - general scholarships, preference
to direct descendants.
- Mary Agnes Gautier Trust Fund - grants for Jackson County Campus nursing
students.
- Tommy and Zelma Gollott Scholarship - must be a graduate of the Youth
Challenge Program and a resident of the MGCCC district.

Drafting and Design Technology students.

music and participating in the marching band. Award is based on merit.

Davis Campus.
- Nancy Walker & Anna Bell Reed Scholarship - must be enrolled in
the Licensed Practical Nurse Curriculum maintaining a 3.0 GPA.
- Bob and Tony Weathers Memorial Scholarship Fund - scholarships for
graduates of Stone High School attending Perkinston Campus.
- Lee Roy and Anna Meyers Weeks Scholarship - Perkinston Campus general
scholarships.
- Charles M. Williams Memorial Fund - scholarships for students attending
Jefferson Davis Campus or Perkinston Campus.
- Myrtle Corinne Strong Williams Trust Fund - general grants and/or
loans. Preference to students enrolled in business or technical training.
- Rural Health Corps Scholarship - provides full tuition for eligible
students in nursing and health occupations programs. Maintain a 2.0
GPA and be willing to work in Mississippi after graduation.
- These scholarships are supported by donations, and the amounts available
to be awarded may vary from time to time.
- Thelma Andrews Memorial Scholarship Must be a Stone High graduate attending Perkinston Campus.
- Hilda Petty Barnes Memorial Music Scholarship Must be music major and a high school graduate, any campus.
- Jerry F. Bates and Mary Bowden Bates Scholarship - Must be a graduate of Pass Christian High School or Gulfport High School attending the Perkinston Campus. Must retain a B average and not receiving a Pell Grant.
- Claude and Mary Ann Boykin Nursing Scholarship Must be a student in the ADN nursing program attending any campus.
- Jack and Sylvia Bradley Scholarship Must be graduating from MGCCC majoring in the engineering field transferring to Mississippi State University.
- Bradley Emmett Bustin Scholarship Must be a permanently physically challenged graduate of Gautier High School. Student entering the health care field.

- Don Massengale Scholarship General scholarship, must be a resident and a graduate of Jackson County School District.
- Louise McNeill Memorial Scholarship Must be a student in the LPN program, maintaining a 2.5 GPA attending the Jefferson Davis or the Jackson County Campuses.
- Hollis-Melton/McDuffie Jason Memorial Scholarship Must attend the Jackson County Campus, majoring in education or the science and health occupations course of study.
- Richard G. OBarr Memorial Scholarship Must be a Harrison County student and a student baseball player.
- Grady M. and Willie Fay Ivey Parker Memorial Scholarship Must be a resident and a graduate of Stone or George counties, maintaining a 2.5 GPA.
- Frances L. Pennington Memorial Scholarship Must attend the Jefferson Davis Campus, must be 21 years of age, and must have a 2.5 GPA.
- Dr. and Mrs. Clyde Strickland Scholarship General scholarship, must attend Perkinston Campus, maintaining a 2.5 GPA.

McDonald's Tuition Reimbursement
Students working for McDonald's restaurants part-time (27 hours or more) are eligible for full-tuition reimbursement. The program is open to shift managers who must complete the "office basic shift management", "basic shift management", and "serve safe" courses. A contract plus two weeks is required, and students who do not complete contract requirements must pay full tuition. Students must maintain a B average to remain eligible.
