The George Regional Hospital Auxiliary awarded nursing scholarships to two Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Level Two nursing students during a recognition ceremony on April 14 at First Methodist Church in Lucedale.

Kierston Goss and Jenny Higgins, both from George County, are students at MGCCC’s Perkinston Campus. The scholarships, which are $1,000 each, will be applied to tuition and other educational costs during the fall 2015 semester.

Goss, the daughter of Frank and Sherri Goss of Lucedale, plans to work in either the emergency room or operating room. After completing her associate degree in nursing, she would like to work in George County or nearby.

Higgins, whose grandparents, Joe and Lavone Gilley, live in Lucedale (her parents, Jan and David, live in Agricola), said she wants to work in a critical care or cardiac critical care unit after graduation.

“These wonderful scholarships are something that the Auxiliary works very hard to raise funds for each year, sponsoring a number of fundraisers,” said Sherry James, nursing instructor at the Perkinston Campus. “We are very fortunate that they support our students so strongly.”

James said that students chosen for the scholarships must be George County residents and must meet the highest academic and ethical standards. She said the intent is to encourage students to earn their degrees in nursing and then return to George County to work.
