Computer Competency

Computer Competency

Minimally, the college has specific policies which ensure that graduates of the institution are computer competent at the college-level.
The requirements for computer competency are published for students in the college catalog, and courses for which credit is established for computer competency are regulated for approval by the Instructional Affairs Council. Computer elective courses which are approved to meet the computer competency requirement must have student learning outcomes that assess student achievement of the criteria below.
  • File Management Students will be able to save files, make folders and manage files for their educational area.
  • E-mail Students will be able to receive and send messages and documents.
  • Internet Research Students will be able to use efficiently search engines to locate information from a variety of Internet resources.
  • Word Processing Students will be able to manipulate text and format a variety of documents.
  • Spreadsheets Students will be able to create worksheets to record information, including skills such as using formulas and creating graphs.
  • Software Application Students will be able to use basic software applications.

Upon successful completion of any of these MGCCC courses, a student will have met the computer competency requirement for graduation.

  • CSC 2623 Computer Programming II with Java
  • DDT 1313 Principles of CAD
  • IST 1113 Fundamentals of Information Technology

Students may also establish computer competency through non-traditional methods such as CLEP testing or experiential learning. In some cases, students may also meet computer competency requirements by successfully completing the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Computer Competency Exam.
