Kim Iglesia, of Gulfport, won the People’s Choice Award in the Annual Student Art Exhibit and Competition at the Jefferson Davis Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Exactly 183 votes for Favorite Work of Art were cast by gallery visitors during the month of April, and Iglesia’s 16” x2 0’’ acrylic painting “Track List” scored a total of 39 votes.

“It was inspired by the track list of one of my all-time favorite albums,” Iglesia said of her painting. “The male with the dripping green hair is the member who actually produced a majority of the songs on this album, so I knew that I just had to make him the main character of this piece.

“The songs I depicted in this piece are titled ‘House of Cards,’ ‘Butterfly,’ ‘Ma City’ and ‘Whalien 52,’ so you can probably guess which parts of the painting were inspired by what song title,” she added.

Iglesia, a freshman, will continue her studies in fine art at MGCCC in the fall of 2016. In addition to the People’s Choice Award, she was awarded first place in the Design category of the Student Competition; the Faculty Association Scholarship; and the Leonardo da Vinci “Renaissance Woman” Award for Most Versatile Artist.  Her artwork was also chosen for the cover and interior illustrations for “Illuminations,” the campus’s literary magazine.

After finishing her schooling, Iglesia wants to attend Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles.

“It came as no surprise to me or her classmates that Kim won the People’s Choice Award and received so many other art recognition,” said Cecily Cummings, art instructor at the campus. “She is amazingly talented, and she has impressed us all this school year with her abilities.”
