Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College held its annual Spring Reception on March 26. The event, held at the college’s Hospitality and Resort Management Center in Biloxi, honored the 2015 Instructor of the Year and L. N. Dantzler Difference Maker Award recipients.  Each year, three instructors and four employees are recognized for their dedication, professionalism and tireless efforts in making MGCCC an outstanding higher education institution.

MGCCC has honored outstanding instructors with the prestigious Instructor of the Year Award since 1971. The winners are selected based on their academic excellence, dedication and professionalism both inside and outside the classroom.

The 2015 Instructors of the Year are Dr. Christy Philippoff, from the Jackson County Campus; Dr. Erin Riggins, from the Jefferson Davis Campus; and Sherry James, from the Perkinston Campus. Philippoff and Riggins are both biology instructors, and James is a nursing instructor.

Each year, since 2003, four outstanding MGCCC employees earn the Difference Maker Award because they demonstrate an exceptional work ethic, a deep sense of college and community involvement, and a tremendous commitment to students.

This year’s Difference Makers are Becky Layton, Community Campus; Maurice Davis, Jackson County Campus; Blythe King, Jefferson Davis Campus; and Reid Wall, Perkinston Campus.  Layton is director of Adult Basic Education; Davis is assistant campus police chief; King is secretary to the campus dean of Instruction; and Wall is the campus inventory receiving clerk.
