Kaleb Davis, a sophomore music major at the Perkinston Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, has been offered a scholarship package at William Carey University in Hattiesburg that includes a Presidential Scholarship, the Elizabeth H. Thompson Memorial Scholarship, a Chorale Scholarship and a Piano Ensemble Scholarship. The total package will exceed $8,000 per year.
To receive the scholarship awards, Davis had to participate in scholarship auditions at WCU in March. For the audition, he performed JS Bach’s “Italian Concerto,” Beethoven’s “Sonata Op. 2, No.1” and Chopin’s “Revolutionary Etude.”
“I was pleased to hear that faculty members at WCU wanted to hear Kaleb demonstrate two of his original compositions following his audition,” said Dr. Joanna Burnside, his piano instructor at Gulf Coast. “He is becoming an excellent composer, and we may see some of his work become famous one day.”
Davis was offered additional monies through an Endowed Music Scholarship and ensemble scholarship funds through his participation in the Instrumental Ensemble and the Handbell Ensemble. He was also offered a scholarship to serve as the accompanist for Carpenter’s Wood, which is a vocal group that performs contemporary sacred literature throughout the United States and abroad.
Originally from Lucedale, Davis has participated in numerous piano competitions and auditions, including five sonata contests, winning multiple awards at each. While at Gulf Coast, he has performed for the Rotary club, Services of Remembrance at the Chapel and, last year, participated in the Mississippi Music Teachers Association Freshmen/Sophomore solo state competitions.
Davis has received the Patricia Dyer Tuley Piano Scholarship all four semesters at Gulf Coast. He will be graduating with honors on May 14.
