Perk Student Wins NOAA Scholarship

Perkinston Campus student wins NOAA scholarship

Calista Guthrie

Calista Guthrie, sophomore science major at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Perkinston Campus, was awarded the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship. The Hollings Scholarship program provides selected undergraduates with awards that include academic assistance (up to $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the nine month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650 per week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance for a second year (up to $8,000).

“I have applied for various scholarships and I really felt this one was a long-shot for me but I applied anyway just in case,” Guthrie said. “When I found out that I had received it, I couldn’t believe it. It is very exciting. I am looking forward to the orientation and the summer internship. I know I will learn many new things during both.”

The internship during the summer between the first and second years of the award provides the scholars with “hands-on” /practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and educational activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation in Washington D.C., conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

Guthrie is the daughter of John Jr. and Sonja Guthrie of Wiggins. She plans to attend Mississippi State University in the fall.
