George County Center opens new building

George County Center expands academic offerings, opens new academic building

Preregister for fall classes, academic class offerings expanded

Beginning this fall, the George County Center in Lucedale will offer morning academic classes, a first for the center. Before, academic classes at the center were offered only in the afternoon and evenings, and on weekends. Those classes will continue to be offered, along with the new morning schedule.

Preregistration is being held now at the center, one of eight Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College locations in South Mississippi. Regular registration is August 19, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., and August 20, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Classes begin August 21. Late registration is August 21-27. Classes at the center are offered on weekends and on four weekdays, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday.

On July 22, the center will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Academic Building, which will accommodate a broader selection of classes for students. Courses will be offered during the day and evening, on weekends, and online. Career programs at the center include Cosmetology, Office System Technology, Apprentice Electric Lineman, Surgical Technology, Practical Nursing, and Commercial Truck Driving.

Full-time academic faculty will be another first for the center this fall. “Since 1972, the George County Center has provided quality education in career and technical (formerly vocational) programs. The addition of the daytime academic classes, along with the academic faculty members, means better service to our students and to our community,” said Dr. Dean Belton, the center’s administrative dean.
