“There’s No Place Like Home” for Band of Gold in 2008
August 15, 2008
In 2008, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College football fans will follow the yellow brick road to entertainment when the always entertaining Band of Gold performs its halftime routine. This season, veteran Band of Gold director David Dueitt and assistants Heather Spicer and Kraig Goreth lead more than 200 band members in a show that features music for all ages.
“We’re very excited about our 2008 Band of Gold, and the show we’re preparing for our home games this season,” Dueitt said. “Our show is titled ‘Oz Unleashed.’ The band will play selections from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘The Wiz’ and the new musical ‘Wicked’, which is the untold story of the witches of Oz, where we find out that a lot that happened before Dorothy dropped in.”
The Gulf Coast Band of Gold has been a fixture at football games since the late 1930’s. Times may have changed nearly 70 years later, but one thing remains the same: The Band of Gold always rocks…especially in 2008, with a show that’s got it all.
“The drill for this year’s show was written by Heather Spicer,” Dueitt said. “Kraig Goreth once again has done his usual fantastic job of percussion writing to the musical arrangements of Mr. John Taylor.”
The show opens with “No One Morns the Wicked” from the musical “Wicked.” From “The Wizard of Oz,” the band will play “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Follow the Yellow Brick Road.” Kathleen Braun’s Perkettes will dance to the music of “Ease On Down the Road,” while the guard and majorettes will be featured in “He’s the Wiz”/“So You Wanted to Meet The Wizard”, all from the musical “The Wiz”. The show closes with another powerful piece from “Wicked” called “Defying Gravity.”
“We promise you a fantastic performance,” Dueitt added, “So come out and see the new 2008 Band of Gold and help us to cheer on our National Champion Bulldogs to victory!”
