  1. Enter your course in Blackboard.
  2. Click on the “Control Panel” button.
  3. Click on the “Assessment Manager” link under Assessment.
  4. Click the “Add Quiz/Exam” button to start the creation of a new online assessment.
  5. Click in the “Name:” field under the “Name and Description” section on the “Assessment Properties” page and enter a name for the new assessment. This field is mandatory.
  6. Click in the “Description:” field and enter a description of the assessment. This field is optional.

Note: The description entered will be displayed to the students along with the link to the assessment in an announcement on the Announcement page only if this option is enabled when making the assessment available. The description will also display when the students access the assessment.

  1. Click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page.
  2. Click in the “Instructions:” field under the “Enter Instructions” section on the “Assessment Properties” page and enter instructions to be displayed to the student when taking the assessment. This field is optional.

Note: You can go back and edit this field after the assessment has been completely created to ensure that the instructions adequately cover all question types used.

  1. Click the drop list arrow on the right side of the “Question Type:” field under the “Select Question Type” section on the “Add Question(s) To Assessment” page, choose “From Question Pool or Assessment”, and then click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page.
  2. Click the drop list arrow on the right side of the “Question Type:” field under the “Import Questions” section on the “Add/Modify Question(s)” page, choose one of the two options and then click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page..

Select Specific Question(s) from Pool or Assessment – This option allows you to select as many questions as need from question pools and existing assessments. To accomplish this task proceed to step 11.

Select Random Block of Questions from Pool – This option allows you to build a random block of questions from a question pool. To accomplish this task proceed to step 14.

  1. Check the box(es) for desired assessments and/or pools under the “Select Pools/Assessments to Search” section on the “Edit Assessment” page and then click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page.

Note: Click the preview button on the right side of the screen for any pool/assessment to view the questions within that pool/assessment.

  1. Check the box(es) for desired question types under the “Search For Question(s)” section on the “Search for Questions” page and then click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page.

Note: You can search the specified pools/assessments by entering keywords into the “Keywords:” option. You can also search for questions based on defined categories, which you set up when creating or modifying the questions. You must select the “Advanced” button to view the option to define categories.

  1. Check the “ADD” box(es) for questions to be added to the assessment on the “Edit Assessment” page and then click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page. Proceed to step 17 to assign point values for the questions and save or save and make available the assessment.

Note: Blackboard displays a portion of most question types for preview purposes. To see the entire question, including the answers, click the preview button located to the right of the question.

  1. Check the box(es) for desired question types in the “Question Type:” section under the “Import Random Block From Pool” section on the “Add/Modify Question(s)” page.
  2. Check the radio button for desired pool in the “Select a Pool:” section under the “Import Random Block From Pool” section on the “Add/Modify Question(s)” page and then click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page.

Note: Click the preview button on the right side of the screen for any pool to view the questions within that pool.

Important Note: A question pool can only be used once for in an assessment when generating a random block of questions.

  1. Click the drop list arrow on the right side of the “Number of questions to import:” field under the “Select Random Block” section on the “Add/Modify Question(s)” page, select the number of desired questions to add, and then click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page.
  2. Click in the “Points” field for each question/random block on the “Assessment Builder” page to assign a point value for the questions.

Note: When assigning point values to random blocks, the value enter will be assigned to each question within the random block.

On this page you can:

    • Modify the name, description, and instructions for the assessment
    • Modify and remove any question in the assessment
    • Re-order the questions by clicking on a number in the “Question” drop lists for each question
    • Add more question items by clicking on the “Add Item” button located in the upper left corner of the page.

Note: You will receive a dialog box that will state “You have some questions with zero or null point values. Please confirm that you wish to continue submission or click Cancel to change them.” If you forget to assign point values to all question.

  1. Click the “Save” button in the bottom right corner of the page to save your work and continue at a later time or the “Save and Make Available” button to save your work and make the assessment available for the students to complete based on the options chosen.
  2. Click the “Yes” radio button to the right of the “Make Assessment Available?” option under the “Assessment Availability Information” section on the “Set Availability” page to make the assessment available.
  3. Click either the “Yes” radio button to the right of the “Generate an Announcement?” option under the “Assessment Availability Information” section on the “Set Availability” page to if you want the Blackboard software to generate an announcement on the “Announcement” page of the course when the assessment is available for the students to complete. Click the “No” button if you do not want the announcement generated.
  4. Click the drop list arrow to the right of the “Place a Link in:” field under the “Assessment Availability Information” section on the and select the location for the assessment link in your course.

Note: The drop list will display all top level folders in the course content areas and the names of the course content buttons.

  1. Click the check box for either or both of the date restriction options and modify the date settings as necessary to display or hide the links for the assessment under the “Assessment Availability Information” section on the “Set Availability” page.

Note: If neither date restriction box is checked, the assessment will become visible when clicking the submit button and will remain visible until the date restriction settings for the assessment links are changed or the assessment is made unavailable.

  1. Check the appropriate boxes under the “Options” section on the “Set Availability” page.
    • Show detailed result: - Checking this box will allow the students to view the complete assessment, showing what questions they got right and wrong, and their final grade for the assessment after they click the “Submit” button. Important Note: The students will be able to review and print this information using the browser print function at any time when they use the Check Grade function in Blackboard unless this option is not checked.
    • Reveal correct answer: - This option is not available unless the “Show Detailed Result:” option was selected. Checking this box will reveal the correct answers for each question to the student in addition to the features available in the “Show Detailed Result:” option.
    • Feedback enabled: - This option is not available unless the “Show Detailed Result:” and “Reveal Correct Answer:” options are selected. Checking this box will display the feedback comments you entered into the “Correct/Incorrect Response” fields when build the questions in addition to the features available in the “Show Detailed Result:” and “Reveal Correct Answer:” options.
    • Allow multiple attempts: - Checking this box will allow the student to take the assessment as many times as they desire while the assessment is available. The Online Gradebook will only reflect the last successful attempt. (Note: This feature is great for providing drill and practice assessments that the student can use to master difficult subject matter. Selecting this option allows the student to self-assess their understanding of a specific subject matter. It is recommend that you use question types similar to those that will be used on graded assessments.)
    • Set Time for the quiz: - Checking this box will place a time limit on the assessment. Important Note: The Blackboard software allows the students to continue taking the assessment past the specified time limit. The Blackboard software does not flag what actions are completed after the time limit has been exceeded; however an exclamation point will appear in the Online Gradebook indicating that the time limit has been past.

Students are provided a count-up timer on the status bar of their browser to keep track of how long they have been taking the assessment. If the timer is not available, the student will need to click the View drop down menu of their browser and select the “Status Bar” command. The students are also provided a warning dialog box indicating that they have one minute left to complete the exam.

·        Password Protect: - A password can be used to prevent access to the assessment. The password is both case and character sensitive. Spaces are not allowed in the password.

  1. Click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page.
