COMPUTER/INTERNET REQUIREMENTS


 What computer hardware is required for taking online courses?

IBM-compatible PC with a Pentium Processor with Windows 95,98, ME, XP, NT, or 2000
or, Macintosh with Mac 7.5 or above

16 MB of RAM

100 MB of free HD space

CD-ROM with sound card

3.5" High-Density floppy disk drive

28.8 Kbps modem or higher

An Internet connection through an Internet Service Provider

Do I need any special software or plug-ins to take online courses?

You will need a current version of an Internet browser.

Current Internet Browser for navigating the Internet:

 Microsoft Internet Explorer

 Netscape Navigator

It is highly advised that you have a copy of Microsoft Word as many of the instructors utilize Microsoft Word for word processing.

If you do not have Microsoft Word, you can purchase Microsoft Office 2003 for Teachers and Students or Microsoft Works 2002. Works 2002 comes packaged with a full version of Microsoft Word.

Each course may have special software requirements. To check requirements for a course, go to the MSVCC web site, click on the “Course Offerings” link, and then click on the desired course link to view information related to that course.

Some other programs or plug-ins that you may need are listed below. Click on the program name to access the download site.

 Microsoft Office Converters and Viewers - These converters and viewers allow you to view Microsoft Office files if you do not have Microsoft Office programs loaded on your computer. They also enable you to open files created by people using different versions of Microsoft Office or in some cases open files created in Microsoft Works.

Adobe Acrobat Reader - Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® is free software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files on all major computer platforms, as well as fill in and submit Adobe PDF forms online.

QuickTime - QuickTime is versatile software that you use to play hundreds of different kinds of files, including video, audio, and virtual reality (VR) movies.

RealPlayer - Play audio and video on the Web, mix and burn CDs and much more.

Shockwave - View entertaining rich-media and 3D web content created using Macromedia Director Shockwave Studio.

Flash - View rich content and applications created using Macromedia Flash.


How to get MS Office at the student rate

 

MGCCC has enrolled with Microsoft for the Student Select and the Academic Select programs.  Faculty and students can obtain software at reduced rates. 

 

To view this offer:

·  Go to the link http://students.e-academy.com

·  Type in the keyword mgccc   Click Go.

·  If you are a new user, click on the Register button on the next screen. 

·  As a student, you will enter your student e-mail address (username@student.mgccc.edu) and complete the other fields.

·  If you have registered in the past and have an e-academy password, click the Login button.  Enter your user name and password provided by e-academy.com.

·  The login and password for the ordering site will be sent to your official college e-mail account.

·  You may click on the Software button above the Login and Register buttons to see what software and the pricing for the software.

 

The e-mail you receive from e-academy should have an embedded URL and the login and password for the ordering site.

What computer skills should I have to be successful when taking online courses?

At a minimum, you should be able to perform basic computer functions: create, save, and manage files on a computer, navigate the Internet, download files, attach files to an email message, and save and open attached files from incoming email.
