Science Department
The Jefferson Davis Science Department is located at the east end of the campus in the Science and Science Annex buildings. The campus is adjacent to a pitcher plant bog, woodlands and wetlands.
The Science
building is composed of three science wings containing faculty offices,
laboratory facilities, lecture classrooms, a Vivarium with wet lab facilities/greenhouse, a
faculty workroom and a physics computer center.
The Science Annex building was recently renovated and includes a new lecture classroom equipped with a built-in multimedia equipment, a new science computer center, faculty offices, a biotechnology laboratory and classroom.
There are two large lecture
halls amid the 6 lecture classrooms in the department.
Each classroom contains multimedia equipment and Internet connections for
the departmental multimedia computers.
Faculty utilize the computers for lecture presentations, guest speaker
forums and demonstrations.
The
Science computer facility includes a newly renovated student computer
lab in the Science Annex building. The student science computer center contains multimedia
computers with Internet capability and several interactive/auto tutorial
programs for laboratory enhancement in Chemistry and the Biological sciences.
The computer lab was initiated by a grant awarded to Ron Marcy through the
National Science Foundation. The physics computer laboratory has 5
lab stations for computer assisted physics experiments.
Lab Facilities
Anatomy and Physiology
laboratory facilities include 2 labs with a full compliment of student
microscopes, models, real human skulls and bones, flex cameras for slide and
specimen enhancement, refrigeration for specimens and a new multimedia computer
station for use by faculty and students.
The 2 biology laboratories are both fully equipped with 30 individual student microscopes, dissection scopes, models and equipment for biological experimentation and observation. Each lab has
The microbiology laboratory
contains 30 individual student microscopes, a fully equipped environmental chamber,
a media/culture preparation room, and a safety/autoclave area for disposing of
biological cultures. The laboratory
is further enhanced with multimedia equipment.
Chemistry laboratory
facilities include 2 labs equipped with complete instrumentation, bench top
chemical hoods, student assigned glassware and drawers and safety
equipment.
The physics laboratory has
an array of equipment and electronics for experiments and demonstrations.
