COURSE DESCRIPTION

A combined lecture and laboratory course providing an introduction to oceanography with an emphasis on the measurement of physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the marine environment as well as functional morphology and taxonomy of local marine biota. Labs associated with this course contain experiments and exercises that reinforce the principles introduced in lecture classes.

CORE OBJECTIVES / TOPICS:

The following course objectives cover the minimum core topics that are listed above for this course.  Additional objectives are taught at the discretion of the instructor.

Core topics to be covered in all Introduction to Marine Science lecture classes:

a. history of marine sciences

b. dynamics of plate tectonics and the characteristics of the seafloor

c. chemical properties of seawater

d. physical factors which control open ocean circulation (waves, tides, and currents)

e. vertical and horizontal zonation of oceans

f. characterization of coastal shorelines (continental shelf, rocky shores, sandy shores, bays and

estuaries)

g. Mississippi barrier islands, including their geological and historical contribution

h. energy flow within the marine environment

i. classification of marine phyla, including characteristics and examples of each, emphasizing

those species that inhabit Mississippi coastal regions and their biological and economical

significance

j. benthic ecosystems including intertidal estuaries, coral reefs, and deep sea communities with

special emphasis on Mississippi gulf coast wetlands and wetland laws

k. physical, chemical, and biological parameters of local environments

l. man's impact on marine environments at local, national, and global levels.

m. current policy associated with utilization of marine resources
