Science Department Bio 1134 - General Biology I Course Syllabus MISSISSIPPI
GULF COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE
* The
prerequisites for advanced science courses identified by an * are the completion
of one of the following: A minimum ACT composite of 21 on the science component,
b) completion of three high school science courses (biology, chemistry,
or physics) with no grade lower than a “C”,
or c) credit for BIO 1134. COURSE DESCRIPTION A lecture/laboratory course in general biological principle with emphasis on
basic biological chemistry, cell structure, cell physiology, reproduction,
genetics and embryology. REFERENCES/TEXTBOOKS:

Office Hours: Regular office hours for this semester will be posted at F - 23. Students may request and make arrangements for consultations as needed.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND PROCEDURES: The following items represent some basic classroom procedures and expectations: 1. Students are expected to attend each class. 2. Each class will begin with a time allocated to answer any questions concerning prior material and assignments. 3. Since the learner must be actively involved for learning to take place, classroom interaction is very important in this class. 4. Do not hesitate to ask questions of the instructor. Allow the instructor you if you do not fully comprehend any content or assignments. 5. Students are encouraged to keep notes up to date and well organized. 6. It is strongly urged to keep notes up to date and well organized. 7. All assignments are due on the date as instructed. No credit (points) will be given for assignments turned in late. 8. Final grades will be assigned based on performance for examinations, completion of assignments, and classroom participation. 9. There are NOT any extra credit assignments (points) for this class. 10. Cellular telephones and beepers are NOT permitted in the classroom.
COURSE EVALUATION/GRADING:
COMPONENTS OF GRADES: Lecture (unit) Exams ( 4 - 6) 75% of final semester grade Laboratory Quizzes (10 -12) 25% of final semester grade * additional homework, and quizzes may be given, either announced or unannounced if it is deemed necessary to facilitate learning.
MAKE UP WORK (LECTURE): Make up lectures will not be given. If you miss a lecture, it is your responsibility to acquire any information missed and to be prepared for the next class period. Failure to do so may result in the student receiving a zero on any assignments due or exam given that class period. Missing class is never good, but missing an exam is a very serious matter. Students are encouraged NOT to miss exams. If you miss an exam it is your responsibility to make the arrangements for taking a make up exam. The make up exam will cover the same material and consist of terms to be defined, discussion, and short answer questions.
MAKE UP WORK (LABORATORY):
Laboratory work missed CANNOT be made up. Any work, quizzes, assignments, or exams missed will result in the student receiving a zero.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
(1). TEXTBOOK: Biology, The Unity and Diversity of Life, (2). LABORATORY MANUAL: Encounters with Life (3). SCANTRON: (Form No. 882 - ES)
ABSENTEE POLICY: Students are allowed one hour of absence per semester hour for lecture courses and one hour of absence per laboratory period. Three hours of absences are allowed per semester hour for clinical/internship courses. If course objectives require a combination of lecture, lab or clinical/internship time, then the absences will be apportioned according to the limitations stated. Excessive tardiness will NOT be tolerated and will count as absences. An instructor may drop a student after the student misses more than the number of absences per semester hour that the course carries. Excused absences are permitted at the discretion of the instructor and are not counted as absences. Instructors will be notified of such absences by the college. In extenuating circumstances, students who are dropped after exceeding allowable absences may petition to the Dean of Instruction who advises the student of the proper procedure.
