Government Information...

The amount of government information on the World Wide Web is extensive. Statistics, Supreme court opinions, NASA images, and Congressional bills are just a few examples of the types of information available at government web sites. Some of the federal information web sites are run by universities. Government sites provide some of the most reliable information on the Internet and it is free.

  Gateways to Federal Government Information 

• USA.gov- This is the U.S. government's official web portal.
• Federal Government Resources on the Web - The University of Michigan provides an outstanding collection of annotated links to federal government Internet sites. Also has congressional directories.

  • Bureau of Labor Statistics - Includes the Consumer Price Index, Producer Price Index, and other economic and labor statistics. Also offers the full text of the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
  • Fed Stats - Provides easy access to the statistics of more than 70 US Federal Government Agencies
  • National Center for Health Statistics - Provides full text of many publications.
  • Statistical Resources on the Web -Provides links to statistical sites arranged by subject.
  • US Census Bureau - Provides extensive data about the people and economy of the United States. Also has full text of the Statistical Abstract of the United States.

  • Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry - Provides information about hazardous substances. The HazDat database provides data about releases of hazardous substances. Site also includes a list of the top twenty hazardous substances and fact sheets about individual toxic chemicals.
  • American Memory - Provides pamphlets, photographs, documents, motion pictures, sound records from the Library of Congress collection.
  • Center for Disease Control - Includes Health Topics A-Z, Publications, & more.
  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms - Provides Brady handgun law information, arson and bombing attacks against abortion clinics, and bomb threats.
  • CIA World Factbook - Provides factual information on geography, the people, government, economy, communication, transportation, military, and internation relations of over 200 countries.
  • Internal Revenue Service _ Provides federal tax information including tax forms and publications.
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation - Provides crime statistics, FBI background and employment information, a list of the most wanted, and Uniform Crime Reports.
  • Federal Bureau of Prisons - Offers detailed information on federal prisons, inmates, statistics, and reports on prison-related topics.
  • National Weather Service - Provides state, national and world information, weather images, and videos, and links to other weather web sites.
  • Justice Information Center - Provides reports on corrections, juvenile justice, courts, crime prevention, victims, and drugs and crime.
  • The Library of Congress Country Studies - Provides an online series of studies of over 90 countries.
  • NASA Homepage - Provides a tour of the solar system frequently asked questions, a multimedia gallery, and links to other NASA sites.
  • National Cancer Institute- Provides extensive cancer information for patients, researchers, and health professionals. Documents cover causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
  • Child Welfare Information Gateway - Provides access to information and resources to help protect children and strengthen families. Includes information on child abuse and neglect, and adoption.
  • National Institute  of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism - Provides accurate information on alcohol abuse, research findings and FAQs.
  • National Institute of Drug Abuse- Provides drug information, educational resources, and material on drugs of abuse.
  • National Institute of Health  - Provides health and drug information, press releases, and medical research information.
  • National Marine Fisheries Service - Provides information and endangered and threatened species and whale recordings.
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration -Provides information on the Y2K problem, safety, air bags, test results, and statistics.
  • Office of the Director of Central Intelligence - Provides information about the CIA and foreign countries. The World Factbook offers extensive demographic information for almost every country in the world.
  • Office of Justice Programs - Offers publications and reports on criminal justice.
  • Securities and Exchange Commission Servers - Provides information on investing and the securities industry as well as access to full text reports filed by public corporations with the SEC.
  • Social Security Online - Provides information on Social Security benefits(retirement, surveyors, and disability), Medicare, appeal rights, and more.
  • Time Service Department - Provides the official time in the standard time zones.
  • US Department of Labor - Offers hundreds of documents providing information about the minimum wage law, child labor, women's rights in the workplace, and other workplace related documents.
  • US Postal Service - Provides postal rates, information of postal fraud and how to detect a mail bomb, a Zip code database and more.
  • Welcome to the White House - Provides access to presidential speeches and press briefings, biographical information on the presidents and first ladies, and lots of links to other federal government Web sites.
