MGCCC to hold events honoring veterans at campuses/centers

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s campuses and centers will honor veterans and active duty military on its campuses and centers on November 8 -10 for Veterans Day.  Celebrations and activities include:

  • Veterans Ceremony, George County Center, November 8.The event will begin at 1 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. Jason Shows, social studies instructor at the Perkinston Campus, will be the guest speaker.
  • Veterans Celebration, Jackson County Campus, November 10. The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the flagpole in front of the Warner Peterson Administration Building and will include a special POW/MIA tribute and a keynote address by Colonel Paul Drake IV, Commander, Combat Readiness Training Center, Gulfport.  The JC Voices will sing the national anthem and other patriotic selections.  Closing remarks will be made by David Blackledge, brigadier general, U. S. Army (retired), who is the current director of the Estuarine & Leadership Development Center on campus.  A reception will follow in the rotunda of the Warner Peterson Administration Building. At 3:30 p.m., a Veterans Day 5k Donation Run will begin at the Curtis L. Davis Gymnasium.  Registration begins at 3 p.m. The entry fee is one non-perishable food item for donation to Our Daily Bread in Pascagoula. Water will be provided and running numbers will be available for those participants who want to log their time.  The public, especially veterans and active duty military personnel, are welcome to attend these events.
  • Veterans Day Ceremony, Jefferson Davis Campus, November 10.The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Veterans Courtyard and will include “Why We Are Here” by Lori Allemand, counselor and Veteran Affairs Certifying Official at the campus, and “Sacrifice for Freedom, Then and Now” by Brian Carriere, social studies instructor at the campus.  Coastal Vibrations will sing both the National Anthem and America the Beautiful.  A reception will follow in the Cyber Cafe´.
  • Fallen Soldier 5k Run/Walk, Perkinston Campus, November 10. Registration will begin at 4 p.m. at the Bell Tower.  A program will be included with the run/walk, with Mississippi Sound singing the National Anthem, a balloon release as a POW/MIA tribute, and special guest speaker SFC Carley Davis of the National Guard. Register for the run/walk by emailing upton@mgccc.edu no later than noon on November 4.  Be sure to provide your T-shirt size.

Kathy McAdams is an award-winning journalist who has worked at weekly newspapers in Mississippi and the Press-Register in Mobile, Ala. A native of Gulfport, McAdams attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, William Carey University, the University of South Alabama and The University of Southern Mississippi. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and journalism and a master’s degree in education and English. She has worked at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College since 2005.
