The annual Jefferson Davis Campus Student Art Exhibition and Competition is being held through April 29 at the campus Fine Arts Gallery. A reception will be held on April 21 at noon. Entertainment will be provided by Jefferson Davis Campus music students.

“The art department had a group of incredibly talented students this year, all well-versed in a variety of media and styles, and it really shows when you see the exhibit,” said art instructor Cecily Cummings. “I’m really proud of how hard they’ve worked and how much they’ve grown artistically since the school year began.”

Student exhibitor Jasmine Lindsley, of Biloxi, was drawn to paint the reflections and tiny details of the bottle in “Still Life with Bottle and Fruit,” an oil painting included in the exhibit. “I sit back and look at my piece, and then just let it happen,” she says of her painting process.

Lindsley plans to pursue her dreams of having a professional art career as a muralist and freelance painter after graduating from MGCCC. She is currently creating murals for public spaces and businesses, including Fishbone Alley in Gulfport.

“Syrian Refugees,” a charcoal drawing by MGCCC art student Madisyn Lanoue,of Long Beach, is one of the pieces on exhibition in the annual Jefferson Davis Campus Student Art Exhibition and Competition being held through April 29 at the campus Fine Arts Gallery.

Another student artist, Madisyn Lanoue, of Long Beach will be attending the University of South Alabama in the fall, where she will pursue a Master’s of Education in art. Her charcoal drawing “Syrian Refugees” pays tribute to the people of Syria displaced by violence. “It was a really prevalent story in the news, and the severity of the situation compelled me to do it,” she said of her rendering.

There are 70 pieces of art in the show with 25 students participating. The winners will be announced and students’ handmade award ribbons will be hung at the reception on April 21.  A first, second and third place and honorable mention will be awarded in the categories of Design, Drawing, Painting, and Ceramics as well as a new category this year–People’s Choice Award for Best of Show. Visitors to the exhibit are encouraged to vote for their favorite piece.

The event is free and open to the public.
