Liz Corso Joachim received the 2018 Hornsby Award at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s annual Scholarship Gala on June 4 at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi. The Hornsby Award, named after MGCCC alumnae Claire Sekul Hornsby, is given annually to a leader, trailblazer and outstanding supporter of the college.
“It is an honor to recognize Liz Joachim for all she has done for the college and for the Gulf Coast community,” said Dr. Mary S. Graham, MGCCC president. “She is an incredible advocate for education. She truly embodies what this award is about.”
Joachim, owner of Liz Joachim’s Emporium from 1988-1992, is the owner of Corso Inc., her family’s 90-year-old wholesale distribution and full-line vending company in Biloxi. A strong believer in giving back to her community, Joachim has served on various boards of civic and business organizations and has been recognized for her service to the community.
A strong proponent of education throughout her life, Joachim is a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Biloxi and The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park Campus. She also received training in business management, banking and media. She started the Liz Corso Joachim Scholarship for nursing students at MGCCC in 2015.
The 2018 Scholarship Gala, sponsored by the MGCCC Foundation, raised more than $700,000 for student scholarships this year.
