Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College celebrated the 2017 Instructors of the Year at the annual Spring Reception held on March 23 at the Hospitality and Resort Management Center in Biloxi.

Tommie Broome, Jackson County Campus; Andrea Clark, Jefferson Davis Campus; and Tommy Snell, Perkinston Campus, are this year’s honorees. Each of them received a $1,000 stipend from the MGCCC Foundation for use in teaching and classroom expenses.

MGCCC has honored outstanding instructors with the prestigious Instructor of the Year Award since 1971. The winners are selected based on their academic excellence, dedication and professionalism both inside and outside the classroom.

Jackson County Campus

Tommie Broome

Tommie Ann Broome, of Moss Point, is the lead instructor for the Process Operations Technology program at the Jackson County Campus.  She has taught at MGCCC since 2003.  Before beginning her tenure at MGCCC, she worked for Chevron Pascagoula Refinery for 23 years as a process operator, spending more than 10 years of her Chevron career in the Learning and Development Department for the refinery. An MGCCC alumna, she received her bachelor’s degree in career and technical education from William Carey University in Hattiesburg.

Jefferson Davis Campus

Andrea Clark

Andrea Clark has taught at MGCCC since 2004 as either an adjunct instructor or full-time mathematics instructor. She began teaching full time at the college in 2011, after having taught high school math for 15 years. She is now chair of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department.  An alumna of the Jefferson Davis Campus, she received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics education and a Master of Education degree in secondary mathematics from The University of Southern Mississippi.

Perkinston Campus

Tommy Snell

Tommy Snell has taught English and coached the MGCCC golf team since 2000. He had previously taught English and coached golf at St. John High School in Gulfport.  During his teaching career, he has been named HEADWAE Instructor of the Year (2007) and Humanities Instructor of the Year (2014). His golf teams have been NJCAA Region XXIII champions (2008-2016), and he has coached 12 individual National Qualifiers and three MACJC Hubert Tucker Award winners. He was named MACJC Coach of the Year seven times and NJCAA Region XXIII Coach of the Year nine times. At St. John, he coached an unprecedented five-straight state-championship high school golf teams and was named Coach of the Year five times by the Mississippi Association of Coaches.
